Hourly Comics Day: 2018 and 2019

If you were to read through each of my old blog posts in order, you might notice a continuity error. In this blog post, I mentioned that I was participating in Hourly Comics Day, and that "my next blog post will be my completed comic". However, my next blog post was not, in fact, my completed comic; instead, it was my announcement that I had safely made it to Paris. This was the case for two main reasons:
  1. I vastly underestimated how busy I would be during my last day before traveling to Paris.
  2. I spent most of my last day before traveling for Paris frantically dealing with the disappearance of my debit card, only to discover that my debit card had been in my pocket all along.
Today, I remembered this continuity error. I also recalled the Hourly Comics Day comic I did on February 1, 2018. I thought it might be interesting to post both comics, so that you can see how my life on February 1, 2018 compared to my life on February 1, 2019.

Since this post is very reliant on images, I took the opportunity to practice adding image descriptions for people using screen readers below each image. I hope to provide image descriptions for my posts in the future. Even if you do not use a screen reader, I provide some additional context for work-specific terms in the image descriptions that may be helpful.

The first page of my 2018 Hourly Comics Day comic. The header reads "Hourly Comics Day", and it features a silver cursive font, outlined in black, against a dog-themed strip of craft paper.

Panel 1 reads "10 AM". A cartoon jellyfish rolls its eyes in response to construction noises. A speech bubble reads "Ugh, okay, fine, I guess I'll wake up".

Panel 2 is labeled "11 AM". The same cartoon jellyfish, now wearing glasses, is reading a book.

Panel 3 is labeled "12 PM". This panel features a drawing of a laptop with the screen facing the viewer. In the center of the laptop's screen, the word "BROKEN" is written in large silver letters, outlined in black. The panel's caption reads "#justconcerned #notanaddict".

Panel 4 is labeled "1 PM". A Polaroid-style photo of a jellyfish, wearing a different style of glasses from the original jellyfish, is drawn in the center of the panel. The photograph's label reads "???". The caption reads "How do I not know who you are? Our school is so tiny. I don't understand".

Panel 5 is labeled "2 PM". The original glasses-wearing jellyfish is drawing squares in their bullet journal. The jellyfish has a concerned expression.

Panel 6 is labeled "3 PM". A phone is drawn in the center of the panel. The phone features an angry face with the letters "ADP" in red underneath it. ADP is the name of the workforce management service that my employer uses to track when we clock in and out. "a.k.a. the bane of my existence" is written in parentheses underneath the red letters. The panel's caption reads "I mean, I just wanna clock in man".

The second page of my Hourly Comics Day 2018 comic. The first panel is labeled "4/5 PM: Work!". The far left side of the panel features a microphone set up on a three-legged mic stand. Underneath, the words "set up mics" are written with a check mark to the left of them.

To the right of this image, there is a drawing of a coiled cable, a roll of white tape, and a permanent marker. The caption reads "labeled XLRs", with a check mark. XLRs are a specific type of cable that we use to plug in sound equipment at the Performing Arts Center where I work.

The next image features two boxes. The first box is smaller and reads "DI", which stands for "direct input" and is essentially one of several ways to connect an XLR to the sound system. The second box is larger and features several cable inputs. The caption reads "plugged in XLRs" with a check mark.

The final image features a box filled with rolls of tape. The label reads "put tape boxes in AV storage" with a check mark.

The second panel is labeled "6 PM". Our glasses-wearing jellyfish has a bloody tissue held up to its invisible nose. The caption reads, in cursive, "Excuse me...my nose is bleeding".

The third panel is labeled "7 PM". The glasses-wearing jellyfish is in the middle of a crowd of faceless jellyfishes with a sad expression on its face. A speech bubble reads "so many people and none of them are talking to me..."

The fourth panel is labeled "8 PM". The glasses-wearing jellyfish has a determined expression on its face. The caption reads, in all caps, "MUST. MAKE. COMICS."

The fifth and final panel is labeled "9 PM". The jellyfish is smiling, and looks very gleeful. The caption reads "The laptop is revived!".

The first page of my Hourly Comics Day 2019 comic. The first panel is labeled "5 AM-Woke Up". The image shows a jellyfish lying in bed, with a speech bubble reading "Why am I awake?".

The second panel is labeled "6 AM-Catching Up". The jellyfish, now wearing glasses, is sitting in front of a Mac at a desk that also has a ruler, Sharpie, and dotted notebook on it. At the time, I was catching up on social media after a month-long social media cleanse. The caption reads "Facebook doesn't hold up".

The third panel is labeled "7 AM-Breakfast". The jellyfish is in front of a plate containing tater tots and a banana. Using two tentacles, the jellyfish is holding a tater tot up to its mouth.

The fourth panel is labeled "8 AM-A Brisk Walk". The jellyfish is walking on a path with two trees and a mountain in the background.

The fifth panel is labeled "9 AM-Podcast and Chill". The jellyfish is wearing headphones and smiling in front of a window.

The sixth panel is labeled "10 AM-Blogging". This panel features a desk with a small tub of Vaseline, an open notebook, a pen, and a laptop with Blogger open and the screen facing the audience.

The second page of my Hourly Comics Day 2019 comic. The first panel is labeled "11 AM-Packing Clothes". There are drawings of several different clothing and storage/disposal items, such as a garbage bag, watch, glasses, box, jeans, shirt, socks, shorts, and shoes.

The second panel is labeled "12 PM-Lunch". It features three jellyfish having a conversation. The jellyfish on the left, sporting a flower, and our friend the glasses-wearing jellyfish both have speech bubbles reading "Study abroad!". The jellyfish on the right, which is wearing a bow, has a speech bubble reading "Study abroad?".

The third panel is labeled "1 PM-Conversation". It depicts the glasses-wearing jellyfish in conversation with a jellyfish wearing a slightly different style of glasses. In the background, the word "politics" is written repetitively in an italicized font.

The fourth panel is labeled "2 PM-Mailing Time". It features the glasses-wearing jellyfish using several tentacles to lift a box onto the mail center's desk. The mail center's desk also features a bell, a dollar bill, a pen, and a blank form.

The fifth and final panel is labeled "3 PM-Comic Catchup". The glasses-wearing jellyfish is smiling as it draws the comic featured here. A water bottle, pen, and ruler are also featured on the jellyfish's desk.
...................................................................................................................................................................

The second comic cuts off at 3 PM largely because, having woken up at 5 AM, I was exhausted. The memories not pictured include (a) watching Crazy Ex Girlfriend with one of my friends, (b) discovering that my debit card was not in my wallet, and (c) being informed that a friend would be returning to campus the next day while I was actively in a state of crisis. In short, the less emotionally draining Doing of Chores and Having of Conversations was captured, while the friendship and heightened emotional states of that evening were not depicted. Perhaps that is for the best.

I hope that you enjoy this blog post! Writing image descriptions was a challenge, but hopefully with practice it will become easier.

Reviewing My August 2019 Goals

This is an image of my desk during Fall Semester 2018. On the right side of the photo, there is a vintage Singer sewing machine which, unfortunately, does not work. To the left of the sewing machine, there is a crate books inside. On top of the crate, there is a stack of Rookie Yearbooks with a crocheted jellyfish (wearing glasses) on top of it, and a picture frame containing a print that reads "all the time". To the left of the crate, there are a few more books. In lieu of a proper bookend, I have placed a tarot deck (stored in a black makeup bag) and a book-themed Halloween decoration (featuring book spines with the words "Potions", "Hexes", and "Spells") to keep my books from toppling over. I chose this photograph because, unlike my current desk, this desk looks like it belongs to someone who creates monthly goals. Hello! At the start of this month, I made a list of goals. As September 1 draws near, I am l...

Media Round-Up: August 8, 2019

Image of pink, green, and light purple umbrellas suspended in the air between two buildings. Hello! Even with posting on my blog every day this month, I still spend significantly more time consuming content than I do creating it. With that in mind, here is a little roundup of some of the content I have been enjoying in this post-camp-pre-semester portion of my life. TV Show Superstore is a character-driven series about the employees of Cloud 9 (a thinly-concealed stand-in for Walmart). After watching America Ferrera in Ugly Betty and Ben Feldman in Drop Dead Diva , it is interesting to watch them in entirely different roles. Watching this show makes going to Walmart feel like a visit to a fully-immersive Superstore theme park. The between-scene cuts to bizarre antics happening at the store are one of my favorite little touches. Music I have been almost exclusively listening to Heathers . Somehow, I have become thoroughly desensitized to the fact that I am listening to a m...

Remembrances and Retail Anxiety

A truly ominous stairwell in one of my school's buildings Bonjour! I got my study abroad card! Thank you to all of the people who signed my card. You are all so amazing and thoughtful! I am having a great time on study abroad, but sometimes I wish that I could be back at Soka with all of you. I feel much more adapted to my life in Paris. This experience has been peppered with worries that I am not taking full advantage of this opportunity. I feel like I should be doing more, seeing more, and spending more. I have had to remind myself that all of the experiences that feel normal now--from taking the metro to climbing up a spiral staircase--were entirely new to me less than two months ago. I am growing and changing, all while gaining a better sense of myself. With that being said, living here has really taken a toll on both me and my physical possessions. The first casualty was a shirt that my mom tie-dyed for me when I was in ninth grade, which tore while I was adjustin...
